While the scientist Galileo looked through a telescope to see the stars, our students use the GALILEO website to see the whole world!
GALILEO (which stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online) is Georgia’s "Virtual Library." It is a collection of high-quality, professional databases that provide students with a safe, reliable alternative to a standard Google search. Instead of wading through ads or unreliable websites, our students can find exactly what they need for school projects in a kid-friendly environment.
What’s Inside for Elementary Students?
GALILEO is packed with tools designed specifically for young learners in grades K-5. Some of our favorites include:
-
Britannica School: An interactive encyclopedia where students can choose their reading level (Elementary, Middle, or High) so the information is always "just right."
- TumbleBook Library: A collection of "talking" picture books! These animated e-books help build literacy skills by reading stories aloud while students follow along.
-
Explora for Elementary: A colorful, easy-to-use search tool that helps students find articles and pictures for science, social studies, and biography reports.
-
SIRS Discoverer: Perfect for curious minds, this tool offers fun facts, "Current Events" for kids, and safe images for school presentations.
Why Use GALILEO Instead of Google?
In an age of "fake news" and pop-up ads, GALILEO provides a "walled garden" for our students.
- Safe & Ad-Free: There are no sponsored links or distracting advertisements.
-
Fact-Checked: Every article and book is written by experts and vetted by educators.
-
Citations Made Easy: GALILEO helps students learn how to give credit to their sources—a vital skill for future middle and high school success!
- Accessible Anywhere: Whether in the classroom or at the kitchen table, your child can access these professional resources for free.
