School—Parent Compacts

What is a School-Parent Compact?

Updated May 5, 2025 — A School-Parent Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all our students reach grade-level standards. Effective compacts:

Link to goals of the school improvement plan
Focus on student learning skills
Describe how teachers will help students develop those skills using high-quality instruction
Share strategies parents can use at home
Explain how teachers and parents will communicate about student progress

The parents, students, and staff of Dug Gap Elementary School developed this School-Parent Compact for Achievement. Teachers suggested home learning strategies, parents added ideas to make them more specific, and students told us what would help them learn. Meetings are held
annually to review the Compact and make changes based on student needs.

Goals for Student Achievement

District Goals

Goal 1: Increase the WCS graduation rate from 91.13% to 93.13% over the next three years for all students.
Goal 2: Reduce the achievement gap(s) in English Language Arts & Mathematics.
Goal 3: To increase the capacity of all WCS teachers and leaders to enhance student learning through evidence-based professional learning.

School Goals and Focus Areas
Dug Gap Elementary administrators and teachers have studied our student performance data to determine the most important areas of improvement for our school.

Goal 1: Increase the percentage of students in the average to high range on MAP reading from 57% to 60%.
Goal 2: Increase the percentage of students in the average to high range on MAP Math from 56% to 60%.

Kindergarten

Teacher/School Responsibilities

We will provide math and reading resources to practice learning at home.
We will be available to families to address concerns.
We will provide daily homework folders that are used for parent/teacher communication to reinforce learning at home.
We will use real life/real world examples to help students make connections with what they are learning.

Family Responsibilities at Home

We will practice reading take home books with our child.
We will practice academic skills provided in the homework folder.
We will communicate with teachers and staff by checking homework folders daily.
We will talk to our child daily about his/her school activities.

Student Responsibilities

I will take responsibility for my learning.
I will use and apply strategies that I have been taught.
I will have a positive learning attitude towards teachers, peers, and self.
I will read nightly and be responsible for getting my homework folder to and from school.
I will always do my best.

1st Grade

Teacher/School Responsibilities

We will send home completed work so that parents are aware of student progress.
We will provide a safe and comfortable environment for students to learn.
We will be consistent and enforce rules fairly.
We will provide lists of sight words needed for students to master in 1st grade.

Family Responsibilities at Home

We will use the red folder to communicate daily with our child’s teacher.
We will read daily with our children.
We will practice sight words with our children.
We will talk to our children daily about their school activities and behavior.
We will practice reading and spelling sight words with our children.
We will practice reading and writing numbers to 120.

Student Responsibilities

It is our responsibility to always try our best.
We will read books at home and school.
We will count and write numbers every day.
We will practice reading and writing our sight words.

2nd Grade

Teacher/School Responsibilities

We will update and inform families through newsletters and Class Dojo/Remind. We will use our newsletter and Class Dojo to communicate upcoming events and skills being taught.
We will send home a reading log and materials to read each week.
We will encourage students to always do their best and support them each day.

Family Responsibilities at Home

We will check the 2nd grade communication folder and attend school functions if able.
We will initial our child’s reading logs each night and listen to our child read.
We will talk to our children daily about their school activities and behavior.
We will help our child with their homework.

Student Responsibilities

It is my responsibility to take home my 2nd grade communication folder to be checked by parents each day.
It is my responsibility to read each night and complete my homework.
It is my responsibility to always try my best and be responsible, respectful, and ready.

3rd Grade

Teacher/School Responsibilities

We will post announcements on Class Dojo.
We will communicate about class work and homework through Class Dojo and newsletters.
We will send home graded work in take home folders so that parents are aware of student progress.
We will meet with all parents at least twice a year to share student progress.
We will plan learning experiences based on student needs and standards.

Family Responsibilities at Home

We will call, send a Dojo message, or send a note with our child for daily communication needs.
We will check our child’s homework, offer homework assistance nightly, and make sure it gets back to school daily.
We will practice math facts each day.
We will read with our child each day.
We will read classroom announcements in our child’s communication folder and Class Dojo.

Student Responsibilities

It is my responsibility to complete homework nightly.
It is my responsibility to read each night and practice math facts.
It is my responsibility to come to school on time, rested, and prepared to learn with a positive attitude.

4th Grade

Teacher/School Responsibilities

We will create an environment in which students develop problem solving skills.
We will encourage a lifelong love of reading by offering high interest books on various levels.
We will invite parents to events to help build community between home and school.

Family Responsibilities at Home

We will help our children prepare for academic assessments.
We will review completed and missing assignments with our children.
We will involve our children in real-world discussions as much as possible to support instruction.
We will make efforts to attend events/school functions.

Student Responsibilities

It is our responsibility to ask our parents to review assignments sent home.
We will read each day.
We will review previously learned skills each week.
We will always try our best and have positive attitudes.

5th Grade

Teacher/School Responsibilities

We will communicate with parents about what is happening in the classroom via letters and Class Dojo.
We will develop goals with students to focus on improving their independence as a whole child.
We will invite parents to attend school events to help build community between home and school.
We will invite parents to conferences to discuss student progress.
We will invite parents to attend a 5th Grade orientation meeting.

Family Responsibilities at Home

We will make it a priority to check each teacher’s Google classroom and Class Dojo for information, class notes, and messages.
We will make sure our children are reading each night, and we will ask our children questions about their reading.
We will encourage our children to use a math or reading website or app to provide extra support (if technology is available).
We will check to make sure our children study class notes each night.
We will check the VIP folders daily and return them to school.

Student Responsibilities

It is our responsibility to talk to our parents about what we are doing in each class and to keep our parents informed about projects and due dates.
We are responsible for checking Google Classroom, taking notes, and completing assignments on time.
We will check grades on Infinite Campus.
We will study notes, complete assignments, and read each night.
It is my responsibility to complete homework each night.
